Noel Sweeney is the Master Distiller and Blender for Cooley Distillery, Irelands only independent distillery and recently voted Whiskey Distiller of the Year 2008 and the European Distiller of the Year two years running at the International Wine & Spirits Competition. Noel's job is to ensure that all the products in Cooley's portfolio achieve and surpass the quality criteria that Cooley set out to attain. He does that by having a good sense of taste, plenty of experience and a precise memory in order to assess and identify whiskeys every day and to understand how they interact with each other as well as to 'nose' all the new spirits to ensure their quality and character. A master blender's job is creative, artistic and technical while a master distiller's is to ensure the consistency of the quality of the spirit produced. Therefore, Noel needs to be part artist and part scientist as he is also responsible for the development and the creation of some of Cooley's Award winning whiskeys, including its Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey, Tyrconnell Single Malt and Connemara Peated Single Malt, which have won over 250 International Awards over the past 10 Years.
